We graded 15 tasks, listed here from most to least exposed. AI can do 1 of them today, speeds up 11 and leaves 3 to people.

| Task | AI exposure |
| --- | --- |
| Analyze statistical information to estimate mortality, accident, sickness, disability, and retirement rates. AI can run analysis code and fit models; actuary validates. | 60% AI helps |
| Construct probability tables for events such as fires, natural disasters, and unemployment, based on analysis of statistical data and other pertinent information. Probability tables from data are computational; AI builds, actuary reviews. | 60% AI can do it |
| Ascertain premium rates required and cash reserves and liabilities necessary to ensure payment of future benefits. Core pricing and reserving math AI can draft; actuary signs off. | 55% AI helps |
| Explain changes in contract provisions to customers. AI drafts clear customer explanations; staff review sensitive cases and questions. | 55% AI helps |
| Design, review, and help administer insurance, annuity and pension plans, determining financial soundness and calculating premiums. Plan design and soundness tests need expert judgment; AI speeds calculations. | 50% AI helps |

## Questions about actuaries and AI

Will AI replace actuaries?

Partly. About 4 in 10 working hours go to tasks AI can already do, mostly fitting mortality and disability rate models and building probability tables. Pricing, reserving and sign-off stay with people, since an actuary validates AI output and carries the accountability for it.

Will AI take over actuary jobs?

AI can already do 8% of the task time for actuaries and speeds up another 76%. People still do 16% of it. The US has 26,670 actuary jobs, with a projected change of +9.2% from 2024 to 2034.

Which actuary tasks is AI taking over?

Probability tables and mortality rate estimates are the most exposed, each scoring 60 on exposure. AI can build probability tables for fires, natural disasters and unemployment from raw data because the work is computational. It can also run analysis code to fit mortality, disability and retirement rate models, which the actuary then checks.

Which actuary tasks stay human?

Expert testimony, reinsurance negotiation and public testimony stay with people. Courtroom testimony on lost lifetime earnings carries legal accountability, and live reinsurance negotiation happens with counterparties face to face. AI only assists with calculations and term comparisons, so the person in the room remains the one answering for the position.

How do actuaries stay valuable with AI?

Take responsibility for sign-off and the judgment calls that AI leaves open. Check every AI-drafted reserve and premium calculation in Excel and SQL before it goes out. Keep an FSA or FCAS credential current, since regulators and employers still ask for it. Move into surplus allocation design for participating contracts, where fairness judgment is the work.
