## Task by task

We graded 20 tasks, listed here from most to least exposed. AI can do 3 of them today, speeds up 12 and leaves 5 to people.

| Task | AI exposure |
| --- | --- |
| Maintain records, such as pharmacy files, patient profiles, charge system files, inventories, control records for radioactive nuclei, or registries of poisons, narcotics, or controlled drugs. Digital records and controlled drug logs are routine software work. | 75% AI can do it |
| Publish educational information for other pharmacists, doctors, or patients. Drafting educational handouts and articles is a strong AI task. | 75% AI can do it |
| Analyze prescribing trends to monitor patient compliance and to prevent excessive usage or harmful interactions. Pattern analysis of dispensing data is well suited to software. | 70% AI can do it |
| Provide information and advice regarding drug interactions, side effects, dosage, and proper medication storage. LLMs answer interaction and dosage questions well; counseling stays interactive. | 60% AI helps |
| Update or troubleshoot pharmacy information databases. Coding assistants speed database fixes; a technician still validates changes. | 60% AI helps |

## Questions about pharmacists and AI

Will pharmacists be replaced by AI?

Partly. About 4 in 10 working hours go to tasks AI can already do, mostly maintaining pharmacy records and drafting educational material. Compounding, sterile preparation, and in-person patient counseling stay with pharmacists.

Will AI take over pharmacist jobs?

AI can already do 15% of the task time for pharmacists and speeds up another 64%. People still do 21% of it. The US has 321,970 pharmacist jobs, with a projected change of +5.2% from 2024 to 2034.

Which pharmacist tasks is AI taking over?

Record keeping and patient education drafting are the most exposed, both scoring 75. Controlled drug logs, patient profiles, and inventories are structured data that software can write and check. Handouts and articles for doctors and patients are drafts an AI model can produce from a brief. Prescribing trend analysis, scored 70, is pattern work on dispensing data.

Which pharmacist tasks stay human?

Sterile IV preparation, compounding, and purity testing stay with pharmacists, since each needs hands on work. Cleanroom IV mixing and counting happen at the bench. Assessing identity and purity requires physical lab equipment. Teaching patients to use blood pressure or diabetes monitors is live coaching.

How can pharmacists stay valuable as AI spreads?

Keep the tasks that need a person at the bench or bedside, compounding, sterile IV preparation, and hospital team rounds. Review AI flags in Epic Systems or MEDITECH before you sign off on a prescription. Use Microsoft Excel to check dispensing trends and catch misuse early.
