## Questions about photographers and AI

Will photography be replaced by AI?

Partly. About 3 in 10 working hours go to tasks AI can already do, mostly caption writing and image retouching. Lighting setup, camera operation and on-site shooting stay with the photographer.

Will AI take over photography?

AI can already do 21% of the task time in photography and speeds up another 32%. People still do 47% of it. The US has 51,760 photographer jobs, with a projected change of -0.7% from 2024 to 2034.

Which tasks are AI taking over for photographers?

Caption writing, scoring 82 on exposure, and image enhancement, scoring 75, are the tasks AI takes over first. Vision models draft captions well, and a person checks them. Enhancement software in Adobe Photoshop now handles most retouching and resizing automatically. File transfer, scoring 72, is routine software work reviewed afterward.

Which tasks stay with photographers?

Equipment maintenance, film loading and lighting setup score 5 to 8 on exposure, so they stay human. Placing flashes and reflectors, mounting cameras and rigs on site, and lacquering finished prints all take physical skill with real gear in real space. Software has no way to mount a flash or lacquer a print.

How can photographers stay valuable?

Take responsibility for the physical shoot, build lighting with flashes and reflectors, and set up rigs with tripods and filters on location. Make the final picks yourself, and check every AI-drafted caption against names and shoot notes. Add motion edits in Adobe After Effects to what you sell.
