# Work out what AI automation saves and returns

Choose a role or a department, then enter headcount, salary and what the implementation will cost. You get the hours freed, what they are worth and the return. In customer service, AI can take on about 1,126 of 2,000 hours a year per person.

The salary and the implementation cost start as estimates. Replace them with your figures.

## How the calculator works

1. **Hours.** People times the AI hours per person for the role or department, times the share you expect to capture.
2. **Value.** Those hours at an hourly cost: the yearly salary divided by 2,000 working hours.
3. **Return.** Value minus the implementation cost, divided by that cost. Payback is the number of months of value it takes to cover the cost.

## Questions

How is the return worked out?

Return is the value of the hours freed in a year minus the implementation cost, divided by that cost. Payback is the cost divided by the monthly value. Both use the share of the AI hours you say you will capture.

Where does the hours figure come from?

Every role and department is graded task by task for the share AI can take on today. In customer service, the department with the most, that is about 1,126 of 2,000 hours a year per person.

Why does the capture share start at 50%?

The grades say what AI can do, not what a business sets up. Half is a cautious start. Raise it if the workflows are already mapped, lower it if the data is messy.

What is the starting implementation cost?

A placeholder of €20,000, or the same amount in your currency. Replace it with a quote, a budget or the cost of the tools and the time to set them up.
